We have been looking at the subject of character in the past few weeks, Part-1, Part-2 and Part-3. Here in this final post, I want to close with something practical for being able to maintain character.
In the last post, I left us to ponder over a question. "Who are we when no one is looking?" I think if we can say that we are indeed the same person then without doubt we must be a person of character. But the truth is many times we are not.
When we decide to become men and women of character, there are a few principles that we ought to keep in mind.
In the last post, we began with the subject of character. The character of a person is often not what we see on the outside but what we cannot see on the inside.
In the fast paced society that we live in today, character is often overlooked. Although we may want character in every person that we meet or know; we don't usually emphasize it. Think about it; be it a company, recruiting agency, college or even when it comes to a matrimonial, while selecting the right candidate; character is usually the last thing we look for. The emphasis has always been on an individual's accomplishments over their character.
When we look at a person, more often or not we look at him or her in light of what they have accomplished. We respect & honour them for it. It's no surprise as to why many people today gain respect and security in their accomplishments!
Have you ever visited the beautiful Taj Mahal? It’s situated in Agra, Delhi. This is a monument that is symbolic of a man's love to his wife. This was even quoted as one of the wonders in the whole world. I haven't been there myself but people who have are often quoted as saying that it is breathtakingly beautiful!
Last year, the Commonwealth games (CWG) were held in Delhi. The ministers in charge of the CWG were constantly in the news trying to save their faces. I don't normally write on politics and don't intend to in the near future but no Indian would have missed the fiasco that took place days before the games actually started!
What caught my attention was an article I read on msn. Their news article had a picture of the same Taj Mahal shown above; only they shot it from an angle we don't normally see!
Hello everyone! It's been quite a while since I could write anything. I was kind of caught up in doing many other things.
For all those who are married, how many times have you tried to surprise your wife with something on any given day? And how many times have they really been surprised at what you had done for them?
The topic of love languages is nothing new. There's this great book, I would recommend all of you to read, "The Love Languages" by Gary Chapman. The whole book talks about the different love languages of both men and women. The primary love language for men and women is quite different!
I had gone through this book a long while ago, but I guess you can say, I failed to use it when it came to my own personal life!
Sorry for the delay! This is our last post on Event Planning. We have already discussed a lot of the essentials i.e Preparation and Planning along with Delegation and Team Work. Let's take a look at what else comes handy for an event preparation!
Lesson #5
Lead by Example
There is a theory that I ascribe to. A leader is a leader not just onstage when they make a public speech or something of that sort, but a leader is one who does his or her life correctly backstage!
It was Albert Schweitzer who said, "Example is not the main thing in influencing others. It is the only thing."
While coordinating an event, Preparation and Planning (Check out part one!) are the key essentials to get started. But that's not all; we have to learn to work with other people if we want our event to be truly successful.
Lesson #3
Delegate Away
Since I was not new to camps, I kind of knew what was needed and what was not. But for most of my key leaders, it was their first time. So, I had to explain what had to be done and how. And doing this took time.
Being a choleric when it comes to work, waiting on work to get done is not really my cup of tea. I did explain some of the works to be done and they did an excellent job at it too. But, trying to gain time by doing it on my own, proved to be costly for me. Not only did it stress me but it also wore me out physically.
It’s 2011!! A very warm though late new year wish everybody!! I’d like to bring in my first post for this year with something I got to learn in 2010.
November 3 to 5 were life changing days for many of the people at our church, including me and my wife. We had our church youth camp. It was truly an experience some of us wouldn't forget for a lifetime! What was so much more valuable to me however, were some of the lessons I learnt as a leader.
The month following camp, I took time to reflect on what had happened and I decided to write on what I feel I learnt through this whole experience. It was not easy! I had to put a lot of commitment, effort and tremendous patience to finish writing!
If you are planning an event, some of the things that are mentioned below, should help you immensely!
Recently, while meditating on the book of Acts, I was reading the story where in Peter and John was on the way to the temple to pray. They were interrupted on the way by a man who had been lame from birth. The whole story can be found in Acts 3:1-10.
What I found interesting was that both of them had stopped to give their attention to the man who had been lying there. They were interrupted on their way to pray. And they used that time not just to do a miracle but also to preach the gospel to others who were standing nearby. They turned the interruption into a tremendous opportunity!
