G for Giver

8:50:00 PM

Do you remember the time someone gave you a gift? Perhaps it was your birthday or anniversary or they just gave it to you to thank you for something; what did it leave you feeling? There was a feeling of joy and happiness because they remembered and cared to give something.  Our son John's dedication just got over a couple of days ago and we received a lot of gifts. We were joyous and overwhelmed and our hearts went out to those people.

Nothing speaks louder than generosity in a relationship. Generosity shows that we care for the person and hence we are willing to give. Giving can involve our time, money, resources, talents and possessions.
One of the biggest reasons for failure in a relationship is selfishness. People are often self absorbed and rarely think of the other person. It leaves behind feelings of hurt and resentment.

G-Giver

Giving deals with selfishness, greed and insecurity in our lives. When we learn to give, we stop looking at ourselves and start looking at others. What I have observed from personal experience is that selfishness attacks us before we give and grief attacks us after. For those who are not givers, they want to hold on to things they are supposed to give and start grieving as soon as they give it.

Psychiatrist Dr. Karl Menninger was once asked what was to be done if a person felt a nervous breakdown coming on. To many people’s astonishment he responded by saying, “Lock up your house, go across the railway tracks, find someone in need, and do something to help that person."

What I have also found is that givers attract people to themselves. People naturally want to be around people who are willing to give. It is generally what sustains a relationship in the longer run.

Take Away Principle:

Nothing speaks louder than generosity in a relationship. It shows that we care for the person.

Tips on being a giver:
1. Develop a habit of giving. Always remember that what you give is what you get.
2. Don’t allow the desire for things to control you.
3. Value people over things. You can give things away and always get it back but not people.
4. Give unconditionally. Don’t give simply because you want to get something back.

  2. Fab tips once again, Danny! I believe that what goes around, comes around. It is all about keeping our karma positive. And when we generously give, share, help, it all comes back to us in the form of inner peace, happiness, satisfaction, great relationships...

  5. I think I get more excited about giving than receiving as receiving ha always been difficult. Drives my kids nuts! we run our business the same way -- what can we give or do to make our customer happy? I love to think of unique gifts to give and how the recipient will respond -- that is more fun than anything!

  9. Missed thid yesterday. This is such a simple yet powerful post, Danny. Because, to give, we must now what we have, we must realise how blessed we are to be able to give. And as u rightly said, it has to come from within, without any expectations of returns !

  10. Nice post, and great tips! May I add:
    1. What matters most is the thought behind a gift. Both the giver and the receiver should remember this.
    2. We should try to give what the receiver needs most, not what is convenient for us to give. Sometimes, the receiver may be more in need of our time, our attention and our concern.
